NOTES:
a. He was drowned when crossing a bridge of boats near the Menai Straits. He was the son of another Roger, feudal baron of Hereford, and Justice of the Forest South of Trent.
b. He was aged 9 years at Easter, 1283. He succeeded his grandfather bef 3 April 1286, and in 1291 inherited a moiety of the estate of the family of Vipont upon the death of his mother, Isabel, which included Brougham Castle in Westmorland. At the death of his great-uncle, Richard Fitz John (brother of Isabel Fitz John), 1297, he was found one of his coheirs. He served in the wars in Scotland, was Justice of Eyre North of Trent (1297-1307/08), and Governor of Nottingham Castle (July 1298). Summoned to Parliament from 29 December 1299 to 26 November 1313, whereby he became Lord Clifford. He also served as Captain General of the Marches in Scotland (1299). In a letter to the Pope in 1301, his seal was affixed, being therein described as "Castellanus de Appleby". He was granted the manor of Skelton, Cumberland, and Skipton Castle, York, by Edward I, and was appointed Marshal of England by Edward II for a few months in 1307. He died at age 39, being slain at the battle of Bannockburn. His widow, Maud, 2nd and youngest daughter of Thomas de Clare, married after his death, without license, bef 16 December 1315. c. Had seisin of his mother's and brother's lands 20 August 1327. (His brother Roger, Lord Clifford, taken prisoner at Boroughbridge and shortly thereafter executed 23 March at York). He was summoned to Parliament from 10 Dec 1327 to 20 Apr 1344. He inherited considerable estates at the death of his great-aunt, Idoine de Vipont. Served in the Scottish wars. After his death at age 38, his widow, Isabel, md, shortly before 9 Jun 1345 (when they received pardon for marrying without license), Sir Thomas Musgrave.
d. Made proof of his age 10 Aug 1354, having had livery of his lands 3 months previously. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Dec 1357 to 28 Jul 1388. Served in the wars with Scotland and France, Sheriff of Westmorland in 1360. Had livery of the Castle in Skipton in Craven 30 Aug 1362, after his mother's death. In 1377, he was sheriff of Cumberland and Gov. of Carlisle Castle, was a Knight Banneret and was sometime Warden of the East and West Marches. He died at age 56.
