NOTES: a. From his wife, Hawise, daughter of Guy de Baliol, he received Stainton in free marriage. b. He was founder of Brinkburn Priory, and from his wife, Alice, sister of Robert de Umfreville, he received Great Babington in free marriage. This property was later sold by Roger Bertram, son of Roger and Agnes. c. His son and heir was Roger Bertram, who by his wife Ida, left an only child, Agnes, who was siezed of Mitford and Felton, which she gave to Alianore, the Queen Mother. Agnes died well before 1310/11, when the descendants of her father's four sisters were found to be his heirs: (2) Agnes (married Sir Thomas Fitz William), (2) Isabel (married Sir Philip Darcy), (3) Christian (married first, unknown de Penulbury, second Sir Robert de Ros), and (4) Ada (married Sir William d'Aton). Note that Magna Charta Sureties, Line 118, is in error when stating that Christian Bertram was the daughter of Roger and Ida; as put forth by the above statement of heirs from Complete Peerage, she was the aunt of Roger who married Ida.
