NOTES:
a. Tradition states that Dr. John Woodson came from Dorset, England as surgeon to a company of soldiers; he and wife, Sarah, arrived on the ship George in 1619, and settled at Fleur de Hundred (currently Prince George County), on the south side of the James River. He and Sarah appear in the 1625 muster of the inhabitants of Virginia. He was killed while returning home after visiting a patient, being ambushed by Indians.
b. Woodson family tradition states that Sarah Winston was from Devonshire. While some dispute that Sarah Winston was the daughter of Isaac, whose origins have not been found, the name Isaac does appear among the known Winston ancestors of Patrick Henry. It would appear that there may be a relationship between the two groups of early Va. Winstons.
c. John Woodson, Jr. made his will 20 Aug 1684, which was proved 1 Oct 1684. He mentions a wife, but does not divulge her name; he also mentions two sons, John and Robert, "who hath labored for himself 3 years, as well as his son Robert's two children, Jane and Samuel.
d. He married Mary Tucker, orphan of Samuel Tucker, master of the ship Vinetree, and wife Jane. John Woodson made his will 1 May 1700, and wife Mary Tucker made her will in 1710. Children named in both wills were Joseph, eldest son, Samuel Tucker, Benjamin, and Jane.
