NOTES
a. There is some circumstantial evidence that Samuel could be the son of Dr. Joseph Ridgeway of London, England, and Mary Smith, but hard evidence is lacking. On 19 Dec 1738, Samuel Ridgeway was granted 1000 acres in Goochland County, "joining to Henry Cary, Anthony Sharoon and Joan Pains Land on or near Willis's Creek." Between the years 1745 and 1762, he received five patents for 1400, 400, 235, 400, and 120 acres. He married three times, first to Elizabeth Woodson, daughter of early immigrant Dr. John Woodson, their marriage bond dated 2 Nov 1739 in Goochland, sureties being Valentine Wood and Christopher Hardwick. After her death, less than two years later, he married Mary Bellamy, Goochland marriage bond dated 1 Jul 1742, and thirdly, to Phebe Seay, Cumberland marriage bond dated 1 May 1751.
