NOTES: It is not known from which of the many places in Normandy called Mandeville this family derived its name. a. In Domesday, he held the manors Great Waltham, Saffron Walden, High Easter and Pleshey in Essex, Edmonton and Enfield in Middlesex, Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire, Quarrendon and Amersham in Buckinghamshire, Streatley in Berkshire, Long Compton in Warwickshire, among others. His son, William de Mandeville, was son by his first wife, Athelaise. b. He died in, or just before 1130. Some sources state his wife to have been Margaret, daughter of Eoun de Rie, Dapifer of Colchester in Essex, but Complete Peerage states this is probably erroneous.
