NOTES:
a. An early proprietor who went to Block Island in the first settlement, John Rathbone first occurs in the meeting at Dr. Alcock's house in Roxbury, and was, at that time, living in Dorchester. As an inhabitant of Block Island, he was admitted a freeman there in 1664, and also appears on this list in 1684, but sometime before the latter date, he appears to have resided in Newport, where he was a freeman in 1683. He is also described in a 1674 Newport deed as residing at Hammersmith, which was the Brenton property in the southern part of Newport. In 1702, he was one of the proprietors of the town wharf in Newport, and died not long after. He was frequently Deputy from New Shoreham (Block Island) in the General Assembly. He also belonged to the Royalist Party in Rhode Island, and was one of those who, in the time of Sir Edmund Andross, was opposed to the old charter government and an upholder of the Crown's Prerogative. He is mentioned in a New Shoreham deed by John Acres as his "loving brother".
