NOTES:
a. He is said to have come to Virginia from Queens County, Ireland in 1742. He patented a total of 656 acres on Flat Creek in Bedford County in 1759 and 1773, and was a member of the Anglican church.

b. He was a first lieutenant in the Bedford County militia during the Revolutionary War.

c. Their first child was John Marshall Clemens, father of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as the beloved American author, Mark Twain.
